Oak Lawn Marketing, Inc. (HQ: Higashi-ku; Nagoya President & CEO: Harry A. Hill; Operations: shopping brand "Shop Japan") conducted a survey on sleep to study the correlation between sleeping position and physical pain.

Since 2003, Oak Lawn Marketing has been selling anoverlay mattress "True Sleeper" which offers a "comfortable feeling" by distributing body weight and gently cradling a sleeper's body in comfort. This best-selling product has been used by over 2 million people* in Japan.

Based on the brand vision of offering "quality" sleep even if just for a short period of time for any sleeping position, Shop Japan conducted a survey on sleeping positions and body pain experienced during sleep.

The results of the survey show that the majority of respondents who feel "shoulder pain" when going to sleeping on their "side" and people with less sleep satisfaction tend to sleep in a side-sleeping position.

The ratios of "side sleepers" who sleep on their side when going to sleep and "back sleepers" who sleep on their back are virtually equivalent. 50.2% of respondents are "side sleepers".
In response to the question, "what is your sleeping position?", 56.1% answered that they sleep on their back and 50.2% said they sleep on their side, making a virtually equivalent ratio. Of those who sleep on their side, women in their 20's and 30's account for the majority (68.4%).

The following table shows respondents' sleeping positions and parts of their bodies in which they feel pain. Of those who are experiencing "shoulder pain", the "side sleepers" account for 69.5% followed by the "back sleepers" who account for 44.2%, marking a 25.3 point difference. On the other hand, a difference in the proportions of the "side sleepers" and the "back sleepers" is 9.8 points for "lower back pain" and 10.6 points for "neck pain".

A "side sleeping position" reduces sleep satisfaction "Side sleepers" tend to be less satisfied with their sleep quality.
The following table shows a relation between sleep satisfaction and sleeping position. Of those who answered "very satisfied", the "side sleepers" account for 34.8% while the "back sleepers" account for 69.6%. On the other hand, of those who answered "very unsatisfied", the "side sleepers" account for 57.1% while the "back sleepers" account for 54.8%. This shows a tendency that a higher sleep satisfaction is achieved by the "back sleepers" whereas a lower sleep satisfaction is experienced by the "side sleepers".
